Max Verstappen is not the only driver who will have to start from the back of the grid to finish in the points at the Russian Grand Prix. Charles Leclerc also has a new engine, which means that both drivers will have a challenge ahead of them.

With that situation in mind, Leclerc took to the track during his first two free practice sessions. "We ran different programmes across our two cars today and my focus was on race simulation rather than on qualifying pace as I will start from the back of the grid on Sunday. The track evolution was quite significant over the course of the day," Leclerc explained in conversation with Sky Sports.

The Ferrari driver considers it a learning first day of the weekend. "It started out being very slippery this morning and then improved with every run. Graining was not an issue, which was positive. In terms of driving experience, I enjoyed the last sector the most."

Leclerc versus Pérez

Leclerc is sixth in the world championship with just 14 points difference to number five Sergio Pérez. However, Leclerc's engine change means the Mexican looks set to move back up the rankings.
