It has been 51 years since Jochen Rindt died at Monza after an accident during practice. To commemorate him the ServusTV program Sport and Talk from the Hangar-7 talked to several people about the driver, among them world champion Jackie Stewart.

The Scot has very good memories of Rindt as they were very good friends. Not only does he commemorate the German in the programme, but in addition to that, he again highlights how big a role death played in the sport at the time.

"The danger somehow created its own chemistry. Many of our other friends also lost their lives. Nina Rindt, for example. The women were part of the lives of the racing drivers. Nowadays you only see the women at the very back of the pits, watching the monitors there. We needed the women on the track," says Stewart.

Doubts about continuing

Jackie Stewart lost many friends during that time and that made him think about whether he wanted to continue racing. Especially the death of François Cevert in 1973 had made such an impression on him that he quit at the end of that season.

That the city of Graz is now honoring Rindt is causing Stewart great joy. "The loss of Jochen will never be forgotten. I think it's great what will happen now in Austria. I will be there too. It was a deep friendship," said the 'Flying Scot'.
