Lewis Hamilton has once again been awarded the Hawthorn Memorial Trophy. Named after Mike Hawthorn, Britain's first World Champion who died a few months after winning the 1958 title, the award recognises the highest-placed Commonwealth driver in the F1 World Championship. Hamilton claimed this year's accolade despite missing out on the 2021 F1 crown to Dutchman Max Verstappen. While Hamilton maintains his radio silence after last year's controversial Abu Dhabi finale, the award was officially announced during Motorsport UK's 'Night of Champions' at the Royal Automobile Club in London. It is the eighth year in a row that Hamilton has received the trophy, covering his title-winning seasons with Mercedes in 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020, and his runner-up classification in 2016. Overall, Hamilton has won the prestigious award during 11 of his 15 seasons in F1, the other three coming in 2007 (2nd), 2008 (champion) and 2012 (fourth). He now sits four wins clear of Nigel Mansell on the all-time list. The Commonwealth drivers on the 2021 F1 grid were British trio Hamilton, Lando Norris and George Russell, Canadians Lance Stroll and Nicholas Latifi and Australian Daniel Ricciardo. Last week, it was also revealed that Hamilton's Extreme E team have won a special award for their sustainability efforts after the first season of the electric, off-road Extreme E championship.
