George Russell is experiencing a difficult first season with Mercedes. Whereas the German team has been fighting for the world title since 2014, this year it seems to be out of reach. However, George Russell keeps his faith in a good outcome, as he revealed in an interview with The Sun know.

The Briton made the switch from Williams to Mercedes at the start of the season to fight for wins, but he struggled in the first nine races. Although he still managed to finish in the top five at every Grand Prix, the gap to leader Max Verstappen increased to 64 points.

Sergio Perez and Charles Leclerc are also above him in the world championship. As Mercedes' problem with porpoising has still not been fully resolved, it does not seem logical for Mercedes to be eligible for a world title in 2022. Russell, however, thinks otherwise.

"Max looks bulletproof but things shift awfully quick and if we find an upturn in performance and Ferrari also find one, who knows? Suddenly it could be a Mercedes one-two, Ferrari in three-four and Red Bull five-six," Russell said.

According to Russell it would mean that things could go fast in catching up. The driver is keeping the possibility open that he can still take the top prize at the end of this calendar year. "Absolutely and I see no reason why not."
