Ferrari admit reliability concerns as Binotto prays for dry British GP

Carlos Sainz will start the British Grand Prix from pole position after pipping Max Verstappen during a wet Q3.

Mattia Binotto says Ferrari will have their fingers crossed for a dry British Grand Prix after Carlos Sainz secured pole position ahead of Red Bull rival Max Verstappen. Sainz was stunned to learn he would be starting from the front after feeling he had more to give following his final qualifying lap. However, a spin for Charles Leclerc and a badly-timed yellow flag for Max Verstappen helped the Spaniard to a maiden pole. "We could see it on the GPS, we knew, but he thought the lap was not good enough! It was tricky for everyone out there but he set the best one," said Binotto, speaking to Channel 4 .

Ferrari hoping rain stays away

Sunday's race is expected to be dry with the rainy start to the weekend likely to leave teams guessing when it comes to strategy, Binotto says. "Tomorrow, we are hoping that it will be dry. I think it will be a guess between one stop or two, it will be something teams will decide after a few laps by looking at the tyres," he continued. "We've not had a lot of dry laps so for, or many on high fuel. I think we'll have different strategies on the track and that will be great."

Binotto admits: Reliability is a concern

The biggest concern for Ferrari fans heading into the weekend is whether or not their cars will see the chequered flag following a run of reliability problems. "Every single race is different. We've got fresh components and I hope that we will not have any issues this weekend but you never know when it comes to reliability," Binotto has admitted. "I think it's a concern for us, maybe for the others as well, it's a concern for everyone. It's certainly an important element, a key element for the result but we are focused on the race we are not thinking of reliability, at least for this weekend, and hopefully they will cross the chequered flag in the right positions.
