As many as nine grid penalties caused much confusion after qualifying in Monza. It was unknown how the FIA would hand out the penalties, and also drivers did not know where they stand and where they can start. F1 Memes ' Twitter account has uploaded a clear video that shows how the penalties were applied to the final grid.

After qualifying, two provisional starting grids came out. One in which penalised drivers could move up due to other drivers having higher penalties, for example Verstappen would move from P2 to P7 due to the five place penalty, but would move up to P4 due to penalties of Sergio Perez, Lewis Hamilton and Carlos Sainz, and one in which penalised drivers could not benefit from other penalties. The knot has been cut and the FIA has come up with a starting grid with the latter scenario. Verstappen will therefore start seventh and not fourth at Monza.
