Singapore will test Mercedes' optimism over W13 performance

Mercedes is hopeful for a good result at the Marina Bay Circuit after the work that has been done behind the scenes in understanding their difficult 2022 car.

There are just six more chances for Mercedes to win a race in 2022 after 16 attempts so far this season. Despite their success at Singapore, the Marina Bay circuit has often been a tricky circuit for the team, owing to the high-downforce nature of the track. While Mercedes has won four of the last six races in Singapore, the margins at the finish line have been small. Lewis Hamilton had to fend off Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo in 2018 and 2017 respectively, while Nico Rosberg narrowly took victory from Ricciardo in 2016. Team Principal Toto Wolff is optimistic about their chances of securing a win in 2022 'on merit' , although believes the bumpy nature of the circuit could pose a challenge. "Since the start of the year, we've been making good progress and it's been a strong recovery from the team," said Wolff. "We need to keep the momentum going, keep learning and extract the maximum we can from every opportunity. "Some aspects of the circuit should suit our car better than some of the recent circuits - but other aspects, like the bumpy surface, might prove challenging. "We'll know for sure when we hit the track on Friday."

Technical Director Mike Elliott: Track layout should suit us

Mercedes Technical Director Mike Elliott has previously described how the teams work behind the scenes has enabled them to predict the W13's performance at races . With that in mind, Elliott believes they will show similar pace as they did at Budapest and Zandvoort with the high downforce nature of the corners bringing out the best in their car. Elliott explained: "Looking back and seeing what we've learned over the season, I think in Singapore we will perform somewhat like Budapest and Zandvoort. "It's a bumpy track and that will bring challenges, but the nature of the corners should fit better with our car. "Hopefully we can score well in Singapore. During the practice sessions we will collect as much information as possible and hopefully we can achieve a good result on the basis of that."
