Russell set to start Singapore Grand Prix from pit lane

George Russell was due to be 11th on the grid for the Singapore Grand Prix, but Mercedes have decided to start him from the pit lane after penalties.

George Russell has taken an entire new power unit at the Singapore Grand Prix and so will be required to start the event from the pit lane. Russell was a shock eliminee in Q2 on Saturday, having struggled with a throttle problem in qualifying – missing the Q3 cut-line by 0.006s. He was due to take up 11th on the grid as a result, but overnight, Mercedes elected to introduce new components into his power unit pool. He has taken a Internal Combustion Engine, Turbocharger, MGU-H, MGU-K, Energy Store and Control Electronics, and is therefore required as per Article 40.9)b) of the Sporting Regulations to start from the pit lane. Russell also has a new exhaust system, but this is one of the eight permitted for the season. His teammate Lewis Hamilton is set to start third, with Charles Leclerc on pole. 19 cars still take to the grid, with Russell forced to wait at the end of the pit lane until all cars have passed at the start of the race.
