Former Mercedes boss sees few opportunities for Schumacher

Norbert Haug, the former head of motorsport at Mercedes-Benz, doubts whether Mick Schumacher will still drive in Formula 1 next year. Speaking to German Sport1.de Haug says Schumacher needs to start getting better results.

It is far from certain that Schumacher will keep his seat at Haas next year. Although teammate Kevin Magnussen is already certain for next year, things remain eerily quiet around Schumacher. According to Haug, his future can only be secured with better results.

"Mick needs results. I hope the exact analysis will be done within the team. He was well on track for his first race in Singapore. For me, he clearly deserves a place in Formula 1. But I think it will be tight"

In Singapore this weekend, Schumacher saw his chance for points go up in smoke when he collided with George Russell. The Haas driver eventually finished in 13th place. It is a recurring theme for Schumacher. He has only managed to score points twice this season, leaving him in a disappointing 16th place in the championship.

No Germans in the sport?

With the departure of Sebastian Vettel at the end of this year, Schumacher would be the only remaining German driver. According to Haug, it would be a great loss for Germany and the sport as a whole if Germany were no longer represented in Formula 1, a sentiment also previously expressed by Haug's former colleague Ross Brawn. This could be avoided if Nico Hulkenberg takes Schumacher's place, but according to Haug, it would be very sad if one German was swapped for another.

Haug was head of motorsport at Mercedes-Benz between 1990 and 2002. Under his reign, Mercedes returned to Formula 1 and the foundations were laid for the dominant Mercedes era with Lewis Hamilton.
