Toto Wolff has explained how Mercedes took a "protective" approach to F1 politics in 2022. The 2021 campaign was memorable for the off-track political battles between the Silver Arrows and Red Bull, with the teams locked in a close fight on track for the World Championship. While this year may have seemed less political on the surface, there were still various issues up for debate, ranging from the response to porpoising to Red Bull's punishment for their breach of the 2021 cost cap. When asked whether he had enjoyed the politics of the 2022 season, Wolff detailed how the team had dealt with this side of the sport.

"It's about protecting your own structure, and I think we all do that," Wolff told media, including RacingNews365.com . "Trying to stay ahead, or to protect or, in a way, to understand where the politics go, and I think it's pretty normal. "I don't think that there [were] any more games or less games [in 2022]. "Everybody kind of lives to their own standards, so I think [it was] pretty [much] business as usual, I would say." In terms of on-track action, Mercedes ended the season in third place in the Constructors' Championship, while George Russell and Lewis Hamilton claimed P4 and P6 respectively in the Drivers' Championship. The squad's one and only victory in 2022 came at the Brazilian Grand Prix, where Russell led a 1-2 finish.
