Controversial Mercedes front wing banned by FIA for 2023

Mercedes introduced a new front wing design during the US Grand Prix weekend. The FIA has now officially announced a ban on the trick Mercedes used with the new design.

The front wing Mercedes brought to Austin was ultimately not used, but controversy ensued. This was because the unused wing had parts (slot gap separators) that would potentially offer an aerodynamic advantage. According to rival teams, the concept was therefore not legal.

Mercedes itself also doubted the design and so the new front wing was not used in the final phase of the season. The new design would not be completely in line with the rules. Now the FIA has assessed that the specific design of the front wing is indeed not allowed.

FIA bans Mercedes front wing

Mercedes never planned to use the front wing at the US GP because the team did not have enough spare parts. Prior to the Mexico Grand Prix, the FIA examined the new design and it was decided that Mercedes should modify the front wing.

To prevent teams from trying to apply the concept in a different way next year, the FIA has amended the technical regulations, according to Autosport.com. It is now forbidden to apply the slot gap separators in the same way as Mercedes tried with the new design.
