In his latest exclusive column, former McLaren team member Marc Priestley takes a look at the evolution of the pitstop. A crucial moment during the race which can gain or lose you positions. If you look back at footage of pitstops in Formula One from the early days of the championship in the 1950's, they're an all together different spectacle than those of 2012. They appeared leisurely, disorganised and, in the case of refueling, downright terrifying. Drivers got out of cars while tyres were changed using large copper hammers and fuel was poured into, and often over, the back of the vehicle.
