Tyres exert influence on outcome of Australian GP

Formula 1 tyre supplier Pirelli has asserted its influence on the outcome of races again, with the teams struggling to adjust their strategies to the durability of the varying compounds at the season-opening Australian Grand Prix. Race winner Kimi Raikkonen of Lotus needed only two pit stops for tyre changes Sunday compared to three stops for their closest rivals, while others struggled with degradation to the supersoft tyres. Pirelli's motorsport director Paul Hembery said the tyre maker came to Melbourne with the intention of offering the supersofts 'in order to spice up the action.
