Honda to return to F1 as McLaren engine supplier

Honda will return to Formula 1 in 2015 as an engine supplier to McLaren, the Japanese manufacturer announced in a press conference on Thursday. The deal means that the British team will end its long-standing association with Mercedes, which began in 1995. “It’s a partnership synonymous with success,” said team principal Martin Whitmarsh who was present at the conference, initiated by Honda chief executive Takanobu Ito. McLaren was powered by Honda from 1988 to 1992, and won four drivers’ and constructors’ championship each in that period including 15 of the 16 races in its debut season of their partnership.
