Engine problem makes a mockery of Maldonado grid penalty

Pastor Maldonado Pastor Maldonado's five place grid penalty was rendered meaningless on Saturday after engine problems ruled the Lotus Formula One driver out of Chinese Grand Prix qualifying. While Romain Grosjean powered to the team's first top 10 grid position of the season, Maldonado never got out of the garage. The penalty, imposed for running into the back of Esteban Gutierrez's Sauber at the previous race in Bahrain, will be deemed to have been served even though the former Williams driver lines up last anyway on Sunday.
