BMW accepts losing is 'part of the game'

Although Mario Theissen has been largely disappointed by Williams' lack of results in the first half of the season, the BMW Motorsport Director says it's all "part of the game."

At the halfway point of the 2004 season Williams are holding onto fourth place in the Constructors' battle, trailing Ferrari by 36 points to 142. While the Championship leaders have claimed eight victories already this year, Williams have managed only one podium finish, although it would have been two had the team not been disqualified from the Canadian GP.

The fact that the BMW-powered team had their best result of the season taken away from them is just one of the many indicators of how the first half of 2004 has panned out for them.

"This season, so far, has been more difficult than what we would have wished, but that's part of the game as well," said Theissen.

"You are not always on the ascent, you will have periods when everything falls into place by itself and then other periods where you have to fight for success. That's what we're seeing now."

However, he is still confident that the BMW-Williams package is moving in the right direction and that success will soon be theirs/

"We have been ahead of plan for the first years. And it was clear that only in the fourth or fifth year could we challenge for the Championship. In fact last year was the first time we were fully ready to challenge for the Championship," he said.
