Government lends Silverstone support

Government will do what it can to save Brit GP

the UK government has vowed to do what it can to save Britain's GP.

Sports minister Richard Caborn insisted authorities will 'use the time available' before a Bernie Ecclestone deadline on the race in '05 and '06.

He said the UK will develop an 'industrial centre of excellence' and insisted it can't afford to lose the current set-up because it'd be hard to 'get back.'

A sell-out crowd of 100,000 attended Sunday's event at Silverstone.

* The 'Evening Standard' also quoted former triple world champion Niki Lauda as marvelling at the current dominance of his old F1 employers Scuderia Ferrari.

''[Even] if you're an insider,'' said the Austrian, ''it's impressive.

''But McLaren were [also] impressive [at Silverstone].

''That was the biggest surprise for me.''
