I agree with the rest of your comments, but this one is interesting. I saw both of the senior Villeneuves race many times and this comment is a stretch to me.

Le oncle Jacques had a winning record it's true, but it was often accomplished against less competition than Gilles faced. Gilles rarely made errors, forced or otherwise, while Jacques ... well, he did crash himself out of a few important races.

Having said that, if Jacques Sr wasn't an ultimate talent, he has to be among the bravest race drivers I've ever watched.

What makes you believe the two were similarly skilled?

I also had the opportunity to watch both Gilles and Jacques Sr. race. In fact I was actually present at Gilles first f1 race in Canada at Mosport Park. I was a youngster and my dad who was an avid motor racing fan took me to see my first F1 race. We camped out in a small tent in the infield for the entire race weekend and it was one of those defining moments in my childhood I will never forget.

Anyways, jacques Sr. was a brave, talented and fiesty driver but he in no way was in the same league as his brother Gilles in my opinion. Like Gilles he was very aggressive driver and at times was blazing fast, but he quite simply made far too many unforced errors at times. He crashed alot, and he was no match for gilles in rainy conditions where gilles was quite simply in a league of his own. The bottom line is, Uncle jacques didn't have the same level of car control as Gilles did.

History would suggest this since if he did he would have had a long and prosperious f1 career instead of just a cup of coffee in f1. He tried to qualify 3 times to f1 races: the 1981 Canadian and American GPs and the 1983 canadian GP but failed in each attempt albeit in crappy cars.
