Mansell to make a one-off comeback

Former world champion Nigel Mansell will return to racing this weekend in a one-off charity competition in Germany.

Mansell, who won his world title in 1992 and hung up his helmet three years later, will take part in the £350,000 Race of Legends at the Norisring near Nuremberg this weekend, on the support bill of Germany's DTM championship.

Mansell will lock horns with fellow former champions and ex-team-mates Alain Prost and Emerson Fittipaldi, who he competed against at Ferrari in Formula One and in Indy Cars respectively.

Five-time MotoGP title winner Mick Doohan will try his hand at four-wheel racing while Jody Scheckter completes the line-up for Saturday's contest.

Each driver will get their chance at a fast lap in modern DTM machinery from Audi, Mercedes and Opel before their times are aggregated to determine a winner.

"Never before in the DTM history, there has been a race like this," said DTM organiser Hans Werner Aufrecht.

"This is an additional highlight for both the crowds on the Norisring grandstands and the TV audience. We are truly proud that these former world champions agreed to enter the DTM cars for this charity event."
