Max Mosley will give formal notice to teams on Wednesday that speeds in F1 must be reduced.

Recent events have convinced the FIA president that cars must be slowed down.

He has informed teams that he will be asking the FIA world motorsport council on Wednesday to set the wheels of reform in motion.

He told Reuters: "I've told them that I'm going to ask the world council to give formal notice to the technical working group to come up with changes to slow the cars.

"That's the immediate priority and maybe out of that will come some ideas to make changes. They've then got two months to come up with something sensible."

If the teams cannot agree on a way to go forward, Mosley has threatened to impose his own ideas on the sport.

His plans, first announced in April, are primarily designed to reduce costs but should also help curb speeds.

Mosley initially said the changes would be introduced gradually over the next four years.
