Williams: 'Schumi's not as bright as Senna was'

Wednesday July 14 2004

Michael Schumacher and Ayrton Senna may have been equal adversaries when out on-track but according to Sir Frank Williams when it came to intelligence Senna won hands down.

The debate of which of the two is the better driver has raged for more than a decade now, and was again brought to the fore earlier this season when F1 remembered Senna on the ten-year anniversary of his death. The Brazilian was killed during the 1994 San Marino GP when his Williams crashed in a barrier at the Imola circuit.

As Senna's last team boss Sir Frank is often questioned about the triple World Champion with people wanting to know who he believes is the better of the two. That, though, according to the Englishman, is a tough call, but if pushed for an answer he'd give the prize to Senna.

"Ayrton Senna was just as quick, just as brave and probably more intelligent," Williams said.

"I've always thought he could have become President of Brazil. He was a terribly clever guy. In any negotiation, you had to be good at chess because he had always prepared at least three moves and four counter-moves for every possibility. He had astonishing mental preparation."
