Gascoyne believes new rules will level F1's playing field

Formula One's new rules could shake up the grid order next season, Toyota technical director Mike Gascoyne says.

The sport's governing body the FIA is to introduce a series of measures aimed at slowing the cars and reducing costs.

And Gascoyne told BBC Radio Five Live: "There may well be a mix-up because it brings everyone back to the same level.

"Some teams are doing a better job than others. A big aerodynamic change is a challenge and if you get it right you may well get an advantage."

Among the changes proposed for 2005 are restrictions on aerodynamics, making engines last for two Grands Prix, and a limit to two sets of tyres per race weekend - and one for qualifying and the race.

Gascoyne believes the tyre restrictions - which are designed to slow speeds in the corners by forcing teams to use harder rubber - could also spice up the racing.

The teams have until 6 September to propose alternative suggestions to the FIA's plans or the changes will be forced upon them.

But they are expected largely to be accepted as they fundamentally mirror proposals drawn up by the technical directors of the teams in a meeting prior to the British Grand Prix.

I for one agree with these changes and well if they are restricted on tyres to use will mean LESS pit stops means less TEAM organising of the race and strategies, seems good to me, all down to the driver WTG

Im pretty happy with the changes, can't find much fault in them.

I say reduce aero, bring back slicks!! Having said I agree with the rules, I must say I totally disagree with the engine rules, keep the V10s, heck, bring back the V12's, but not V8's.
