FORMER RACER ALLISON DIES

Former British Formula 1 driver Cliff Allison has passed away at the age of 73.

The Briton had a promising but short-lived grand prix career in the late 1950s and early 1960s, in which he drove for now-legendary marques Ferrari and Lotus.

After making a strong impact in his debut season with Lotus in 1958, including a fourth place finish at the daunting Spa-Francorchamps road course, he landed a works Ferrari drive in 1959.

He went on to claim his best result of second with the Italian team in the 1960 Argentine GP, before a practice crash at Monaco sidelined him from the rest of the campaign with a broken arm and facial injuries.

Another serious crash at Spa in 1961 left him with severe leg injuries and ended his career prematurely.

Allison spent his retirement in his home village of Brough in Cumbria's Eden Valley.
