KIMI CAN TAKE TITLE SAYS WHITMARSH

(ITV)

Monaco Grand Prix winner Kimi Raikkonen can win the world championship, that is the view of McLaren managing director Martin Whitmarsh.

The Finn has started from pole position for the last three races and won in both Spain and Monaco, and on current form Whitmarsh reckons Raikkonen can haul in championship leader Fernando Alonso's 22 point lead.

"Kimi's come close before and he can win this championship," said Whitmarsh.

"Clearly Kimi is making the strongest thrust for the championship in our team at the moment and he will, I'm sure, be determined to go on and win quite a few more races."

But the team's principal Ron Dennis urged caution and said that it was too early to make predictions about Kimi's title chances.

"The championship is a long way off now," he said

"The only way you can get your mind around it is to think about what I say to my kids - how do you eat an elephant? There's only one way to eat an elephant, one mouthful at a time.

"There is no way we are going to swallow that lead in one event, it's going to take time."

Dennis did concede however that there is no reason why Raikkonen can't maintain his form in future races.

"I don't think there's any doubt that we have a car that is capable of winning any of the remaining races if the competition retains its current position," he said.

"You never know where you are because you never know how competitive the teams are, but we will continue to improve the car."
