Jense shoulders 'blame' for contract saga

Friday September 02 2005

Jenson Button concedes to making a huge mistake in the past that is currently affecting the present and could ultimately wreck his future.

Button finds himself embroiled in the middle of complex negotiations he hopes will lead to him avoiding driving for Williams next season.

The 25-year-old is desperate to remain with BAR, a team he sees as giving him the best chance of not only his first race victory, but also for potentially winning the Formula One World title.

His problem, though, is Williams are understood to have a cast-iron contract and have so far publicly expressed no willingness to release him from the agreement.

Button knows he has landed himself in a real mess, and not for the first time following the dispute last season when he wanted to go to Williams, but ended up staying with BAR.

"It's frustrating, and I have to take a lot of the blame for making the wrong decision in the first place," he revealed, aware Williams are a team on the decline, with BAR on the rise.

"It's a pretty disastrous situation to be in, and there's a big difference in whether I am with BAR or not next year."

"This is 100 percent where I want to be and the only option I have for the future and fighting for the World Championship."

"If I go somewhere else, then drivers can get forgotten very quickly, however good you are, and that's the worry."

Button believes the situation needs to be resolved before the end of the season, which this years ends in China on October 16, for the good of everyone concerned.

"We've been talking, but I want to try and sort it out behind the scenes," the Brit insisted.

"The good thing, and the most important thing, is we are talking about the situation. It's not just silence and a cut off."

"But I can't say yet the talks are going well, although hopefully it will be over soon. It has to be before the end of the season."

"That would be better for everyone, and all involved know that, and it's something we have talked about."
