Like this HAS been the best racing in ages so why play about with the rules???

ONE rule I would love to see is the TYRE ( TIRE) diameter one so that F1 cars could use the lower profile tyres commonly available to ordinary road going cars. In my very humble opinion if that rule was changed they could dispense with all aerodymanic aids like front/rear wings and still be as fast or faster in the corners. THAT would make for some adrenalin pulsing passing moves I am sure....

Wouldn't everyone love to see the F1 tyre be slick with no grooves and wide like none other! But the FIA doesn't like that in the sense of safety, hence grooved tyres.

Mechanical grip should be greater in F1, but in these modern days I guess the FIA likes to stay safe and put some aerodynamics into it

Safe! the only safer aspects of aero-grip over mechanical-grip is economic safety. It keeps the sponsors happy, less wings mean less 'billboard' space, increacing rubber on the tyres gains none of it back.

yep I agree there Nichos, a great billboard,( unless you have a tobacco company logo on the wing, then at certain race tracks it's plain white or whatever ?) and I guess another spanner in the racing equation.... loose a front wing, you get penalised by the lengthy pit stop... loose a rear wing down the straight... and well that is spectator territory as you run totally out of control to the CRASH point !!!!

somewhere there is logic in this but I for one can't see it..

GET rid of the wings, reduce the tyres to the road tyre profile, without bloody grooves. and see what happens !!!! can't really be any worse then what we have now or go the FULL aerodynamic aids that they had like "sliding Skirts" I remember them in the formula Atlantic days back in the 80's sure was an "Unpredictable outcome " to every race...

The idea with increasing aerodynamical grip and lessening mechanical grip was to slow the cars through corners, so individual safety would be better. In a race situation that is of course not the case as you lose downforce behind other cars.

If the designers were given more freedom with mechanical grip (Adrian Newey is great at taking mechanical grip to the limits, seen best in his Mclaren cars 1998-2000) lap times would be significantly faster. I don't think aerodynamical grip needs to be decreased, just increase the mechanical type

Slow the cars through the corners for safety maybe, but offs will still happen. Unless the off is in a straight line with the car pointing the direction it is going, wings are all of a sudden useless, whereas big tyres (1970-1988) do scrub off speed as the car spins.
