will mclaren make a mistake again this year?

The new mclaren is pretty fast. Maybe even the fastest car on the grid (maybe..lets wait and see what ferrari will make). But as we all know, new rules are in place, and one rule in particular that doesn't really fit in mclarens way of doing the formula 1 thing: Only one engine per race weekend.

One of the weak points of mclaren is reliability. They always struggle with their engine, ALWAYS. Unfortunately we've seen some engine blows during testing with the new mp4-19 and even yesterday kimi had some problems with the car.

Even if mclaren has the fastest car, unfortunately that won't count until it reaches the checkered flag and if mclaren doesn't fix their problems asap they will be in the same sort of situation like last year and the year before.

as the old saying goes, 'to finish first, first you must finish'.

It doesnt matter if you are 10 seconds a lap quicker than everyone else, if you dont get to the end, it dont mean squat. So you can bet that Mercedes will be doing their best to supply an engine to last the distance.

It's Kimi's year

Mercedes have, in the end, brought their engine back up to what it was in the late 90's. Kimi's engine blew at the Nurburgring last year and that is about it - the problem is that they come at the crucial points and at the wrong time, that is, in the race.

:wink: This new rule of only 1 engine per weekend is bad news for everyone, I dont think this was a good idea. Because between Friday and saturday, a few teams might not have a car to start on sunday.

Sure McLaren has been one of the unlucky ones, but maybe 2004 will bring surprises, and the other top teams can also have this problem.

We will see after the first couple of races.

Anyway I believe if an engine blows the same team will not be allowed to race on Sunday, then the top teams will have to put a third car on the grid. That is crazy.

Nah, if a car has to have an engine change, they can still race, but they will lose ten spots from their qualifying position.

I expect to see the bottom qualifying teams making engine swaps before Sunday as they have more to gain than lose out of doing it.

Althougth they are the ones that cannot afford to do so, although some of the richer teams may bring lower-milage-greater-power engines to put in the car in the case of a qualifing off. Kimi would benefit from this.
