Teams to buy chassis?

According to Mosley all teams should be allowed to buy chassis and not have to build their own. This would be cheaper for the small teams and the big teams would sell , so both would be winners.

This could actually be a good idea.

I really can't see how this would work in F1.. It does work in other formulae mainly because of standardisation of gearbox/motor combinations, but in F1 all the teams build their own gearboxes and use much different motors and fuel systems, all with very different specs.

its a good idea for smaller teams who can save money by buying instead of developing, but to me, it takes away from the essence of F1 where each team builds their own car.

It did used to happen in F1, so the arguement about being againt the essance of F1 doesn't wash with me. However Rod has a good point as the cars are a lot more advanced since then, and both the sellers and buyers of the chassis usually both used Climax and later Cosworth engines anyway.

Well when I worked for RALT cars , building F3 and F3000 we built the car/tub as a basic design with some additional attention paid to the engine mounting points etc. but for all intensive purpose the TUB was the same for everyone. i.e. suspension mounting points for the front and rear and steering rack and guages and fuel cell etc.

This was accepted by the majority because they were like a closed class of racing in those days, only difference being the motor manufacturer, but that was restiicted in the F3 class by an AIR intake Dia. to the fuel system, resulting in no more then 160 hp..

IF and it is a big IF they ever introduced this in F1 ( I mean like the F3 rules) it would be GREAT in one way whereby it would be the DRIVER and not the drawing room boys that win the race, but sadly that will not and IMO EVER happen.
