I was very surprised by that result! However, one shouldn’t get too excitable as the main reason for BAR’s success was the rise in temperature from Friday morning practice. In the first practice session, Michael Schumacher dominated and, with a time of 1m20.084s, was a massive 1.4 seconds faster than Rubens who was in turn 0.8 seconds ahead of Ralf.

However, the temperatures were much hotter for the second session and so the times were slower and Bridgestone suffered. Button was quickest with a time of 1m20.966s with Sato second with a good lap of 1m21.159s. However, even in these hot temperatures, which cost Michael Schumacher a huge 1.1 seconds, he was still only 0.2 seconds off Jenson’s time and a mere 0.01 seconds of Sato’s time. Since both the Jordan and Minardi teams rounded off the times well of the pace – Bruni who was third from last was a full 4.7 seconds off Jenson’s time – and because of the aforementioned reasons I conclude that Ferrari will dominate in the race so long as it stays cool, as is forecasted. Its nice to see the BAR drivers doing so well but their result is artificial and will not be repeated in qualifying unless the track heats up.

Its also nice to see McLaren improving – Kimi finished 4th in the second practice session with DC behind in 9th. However, the gap between the two McLaren drivers was only 0.2 seconds – it was very competitive near the front.

If this is only practice, I can only wonder what the race will be like. Shame they had to get rid of the Tamburello.

Well done to the team and Jenson. I seem to recall a race where JV outqualified M$ during his time at BAR, but can't recall when. I'm not really sure about it though, so apologies in advance if im wrong. I'll check during the week and get back to you.

Great result from Jenson, hopefully BAR can challenge Ferrari again at the next race...
