Dennis motivated by the pain of losing

Tuesday May 11 2004

David Coulthard is not the only McLaren team member hurting as Ron Dennis is also finding the team's present situation 'extremely painful'.

For the second time this year the team failed to score a single point in a race, and left Spain on Sunday evening daunted by the magnitude of the task ahead of them. McLaren have scored only five points from the first five races while their rivals Ferrari have 82 to their credit.

But instead of letting the situation get him down, Dennis says it actually motivates him to do better.

"It's of course not where we want to be. It's extremely painful, and it's extremely motivating," the McLaren team boss told Reuters.

One of the things it is motivating the team to do is work hard at producing a development car to replace the sub-standard MP4-19. McLaren are hoping it will make its competitive debut mid-season.

"I anticipate that we will have a significant performance step sometime in the next six races, sooner rather than later," Dennis said. "Our energy is very much going on to that but at the same time there is a lot of preparatory work which is following through, coming through slowly into the car's performance."

Mercedes motorsport boss Norbert Haug is also adopting a positive attitude, saying McLaren have been at the top before and "we will come back."

He does concede, though, that it will take time. "We can react quite quickly, but quite quickly means at least half a year's time in reality. Nobody fell asleep over the winter, I think the team worked even harder than before but the technical package we have at the moment is just not good enough to win races. But we are going to change that."

"I'm not sure whether we will be there in five or six races but I'm sure that you will see an upward trend in the second half of the season. We are going to have a couple of difficult races ahead of us and we will live with it."
