Head rules out Coulthard

Short of writing 'David Coulthard won't be joining Williams' on a large placard and putting it on display outside the team's garage at the British GP, Patrick Head's comments this weekend couldn't have made it any clearer that the Scot will not be returning to the team for next season.

With Williams set to require two new drivers for 2005, Coulthard has been strongly linked with a move back to Grove. The Scot will be displaced at McLaren by the imminent arrival of Williams' current driver Juan-Pablo Montoya but it appears that his perceived similarities to Ralf Schumacher, Montoya's current team-mate who will almost certainly also leave Williams at the end of the season, will prevent DC being one of their replacements.

Head, Williams' Director of Engineering, is known to have become exasperated with Ralf's inconsistent performances, and apparently believes that Coulthard shares the same weakness.

"Juan Pablo has chosen to go to McLaren, and let's say we have had reservations about whether it's the best option for us to carry on with Ralf, which has caused him to look around," Head told the Sunday Times. "It's not ideal, but there are 12 or 14 drivers who can win races, given the right car. That's what matters; if we do that, we'll have two drivers who can win races next year.

"There are times when Ralf is outstanding and times when the performance doesn't seem to be there, although he would argue it's the car that's the problem."

"Take a driver like David Coulthard," Head continued as he warmed to his theme. "In some races - not so much recently - he's put in an absolutely stunning performances, and at the next race he's appeared to give a very mediocre performance. I'm sure he would give strong reasons technically why, but that's how it appears. Well, we've never been into 'mind-guruing' at Williams, and we're not going to start now."

Although Head would not be drawn on whether or not Jacques Villeneuve would be returning to the team - "We have a lot of options, and won't be rushing the decision unnecessarily" was all he was willing to say - Patrick supported the recent declaration of Sam Michael, who, on Head's instigation, took over as Williams' Technical Director last month, that Mark Webber was top of the Williams' wish-list for 2005.

"Sam sees a guy that's committed, determined to succeed and prepared to put much more time into the team than just turning up on Thursday at grands prix. Someone who can work with Williams to get into a championship-winning position, in fact."

if it was upto me I'd have Villeneuve and Fisi in the two Williams seats in an instant. As I said earlier, they claim to want an experienced race winner, which Fisi and Heidfeld are not, only Villeneuve is available to meet that requirement, so hopefully they stick to their word.

Fisichella is experienced and a race winner, however he is not particularly good which is why none of the top teams have looked at him twice. I
