JORDAN DEFENDS HEIDFELD BLOCK

Last Updated: Thursday, 22, July, 2004, 10:40

Eddie Jordan has defended his decision to stop Nick Heidfeld testing with Williams last week.

The German was due to test the FW26 on the final day of testing at Jerez alongside Williams test driver Antonio Pizzonia.

The two would effectively have had a shoot-out for the race seat at the German GP this weekend, but Jordan blocked the move because Williams was not willing to cover the extra costs the Silverstone-based team would have incurred.

Jordan told Autosport: "I have always maintained that I want to help Nick get a top drive and I will stay true to my word, but I also have to protect the interests of Jordan. If one of our drivers were to test elsewhere, Jordan would have had 24 hours to find a new driver and test him for three days with all the costs that would involve. All I asked Williams was for those costs to be covered.

"I never sought a profit from this, only to cover the losses we would have to repay, for example, for extra engine mileage with a new driver."

Jordan also admitted that should Heidfeld clinch the seat, it would have only have been a temporary measure for the advantage of Williams alone.

"I think this reveals they were just playing with Nick. It looked like they didn't want to commit to him, but they wanted to use him for a test and maybe a handful of races for their own gain."

Williams have confirmed Pizzonia will drive this weekend. It will be the Brazilian's first grand prix since the British Grand last year

In doing so, could EJ have inadvertedly ended Nick's chances at Williams? For purely selfish reasons of which youd all probably be aware of, I hope so. 8)
