NEW RENAULT READY TO ROLL

Last Updated: Thursday, 13, January, 2005, 16:19

Renault fired up their new R25 car for the first time on Wednesday, engineering boss Pat Symonds has revealed.

Speaking at the Autosport International show, Symonds said the team had been very encouraged by the new chassis and, in particular, their latest engine.

He said: "We fired up our new car for the first for the first time yesterday afternoon, and it all looked pretty good on the testing rigs.

"We will take it testing for testing for the first time in 10 days time.

"The engine has progressed very well indeed. It is very encouraging.

"For the second year running, we will be starting the new season with more power than we ended the last one."

F1's new regulations dictate that engines must now last for two full race weekends.

But Symonds said: "The difference is not perhaps as great as you may think, although I am sure my colleagues in Paris wouldn't agree with me.

"There's nothing new about long-life racing engines - look at the Le Mans 24 Hour race, for example. It is just new to F1."

And Symonds said the rule change would reduce costs, although he added: "It is not as significant as some people might think.

"The number of engines we run on the dynometer far exceeds the number we put in cars."
