Well you cant remove them from Monaco, but there shouldnt be walls that close to the track anywhere else, except on a straight or something. That is what really freaks me out about rallying, trees and boulders on the side of the road that you will hit if you make one little mistake. But that is what makes it all the more exciting.

I have to disagree Jens, safe yes but I think if a driver oversteps a little the surface should slow the car significantly, but if a four wheels go of the track the cars should be damaged or the wooden plank overworn or something like that. The track is where the drivers are supposed to keep the cars.

Hi Folks,

DID you watch the MONZA GP !! if so DID you see what I was talking about ? Like that Mickey Mouse chicane at the end of the main straight ? Did R.S USE that nice piece of PAINTED GREEN concrete/bitumen ? answer YES and did all the other drivers also .. answer YES.. so my arguement is WHY have that GREEN painted surface there or WHY have the corner !!! Seems to me most drivers treated it as a sort of HINDRANCE to their PREFERED racing line... A corner is a corner is a corner.. Ok like the Rally cars have a corner to navigate, they dont have the luxury of cutting it short and going over a paved surface.. so why should it be in F1... sure has got me beat, I really cannot understand the logic in the circuit designers mind on this one.. I bet if Fangio was racing today he would have RELISHED in the conditions these drivers have. oh and the megga bucks also :-) COME on people that make this the best racing that there is !! THINK a bit about what you are allowing people to do, OK IF you use the green painted bit OUTSIDE a corner and you gain a place , you will be penalised !!! so why provide it in the first place, Seems to me to be an ARGUEMENT waiting for a place to happen , and the Penalty may not suit the crime in some instances, so WHY HAVE THE SITUATION IN THE FIRST PLACE !!!!!!!!!

I will now climb down slowly ( am getting old ) from my soap box :-)

hehehehehe

Rodders makes a good point, why have that green surface there in the first place? I think though that if it were a wall there could have been carnage Spa98 style, so it is good to have it for the first lap, and also when a driver gets a bit too ambitious on how good his brakes are. Maybe there should be some sort of penalty, like having to put on your pitlane speed limiter for 3 seconds or something every time you go over the green stuff?

They are supposed to be the best drivers in the world at this point in time, so why don't they behave like that. Get that DC out of there he lost his nose in the weekend, and was one of the key players in causing Spa 98.

Well Spa 98 was unavoidable after DC spun it, just a chain reaction. The funniest bit is when you watch the replay and good old Tora Takagi comes barreling into the carnage without seemingly slowing at all!

a penalty of applying the speed limiter ????????? Holy Mackeral ANOTHER rule to be added, misunderstood, wrongfully applied !!!!!!

The TOTAL starting grid of F1 are SUPPOSED to be the BEST drivers in the world.... ummmm some maybe not just BIG FAT wallets. Like how many can't even exit the pits without driving over the WHITE LINE ???

I have to disagree with you Jens. IF the course designers make a corner like that one in MONZA it is/was supposed to be / but isnt a means of slowing the cars speed..

My idea is for SAFETY sake make that green bit on the inside of the Chicane WIDER and LONGER i.e an ESCAPE road in the interests of safety BUT with no means of getting back onto the track AFTER the corner, thus making the driver have to Power Turn his car in order to return to the track where he went off, No need for rules or rule books, simple if the driver stuffs up he pays the penalty and most probably he wont eep the engine running so pays the ultimate penalty.. Sad but fact it is called Motor Racing

Good point. But thing is Bernie and Sid Watkins are safety freaks, simply because a driver death or injury is bad publicity for the sport. Burti at Spa last year caused a havoc, luckily nothing happened.

The Safety Car though is rumoured to be removed for next season, and when the safety car should be out all the drivers will have to slow by putting on their pitlane speed limiters at the same time, to allow for the leaders to retain their lead. Good example is Hockenheim 2000, where the Mclarens lost their lead and Hakkinen lost a victory that could have (ultimately) helped him win the championship. That stupid idiot on the track...

Good point Rod no legaslative penalty just circumstancial ones. It is fair and VERY easy to police.

The Safety limiter situation you referred to Jens was as I heard it to be done by telemetry to the car, not the driver. And controlled by race control, not the teams. One of the reasons 2 way telemetry was recently permitted.

It does seem a lot fairer, on those that have built up a lead. Coming into the pits at that time will be interesting to see what the teams will do. As the penalty for doing so will be less than at racing speeds. But the penalty compaired to a safety car situation will depend very much on circumstance, eg

If you came out of the pits in the middle of the pack;

then - you have to wait till the snake has passed

now - you can join at the first gap

If you come out just befor the leader when lapping is a bit of a way off;

then - you could catch up to the tail

now - you have to wait until the end of the safety period before catching up.

So safety pitting will not be quite as automatic.

Yep, but still the safety car gives a much better advantage. Had the car not been deployed for instance I will use Hockenheim 2000 again, there is no chance in hell that Barrichello would have taken his maiden victory there and then.
