Nigel Mansell claims he is surprised and disappointed that old rival and four-time Formula 1 world champion Alain Prost is not taking part in the Grand Prix Masters series.
The new category, a self-styled seniors tour for Formula 1 stars, has attracted several ex-champions including Mansell, Emerson Fittipaldi and Alan Jones, not to mention GP winners like Riccardo Patrese, Rene Arnoux and Patrick Tambay.
But Prost claims other commitments have prevented him from taking part in the race at Kyalami on November 13.
Mansell indicated however that the Frenchman feels he hasn't had sufficient time to test the car.
"I am very surprised and I don’t mind saying it, I think it’s a mistake he’s not doing it," said Mansell.
"It is his own fault that he says he feels he is starting a day or so later than some of us and if a day makes that big a deal to him then I am very surprised."
Mansell has some history with the Frenchman.
The pair raced together in a politicised Ferrari team in 1990 and then he was replaced by Prost at Williams after winning the world championship in 1992.
But the British legend reckons that Prost will have to pick up the gauntlet if GPM proves successful in Kyalami.
"I think he will have to gravitate to the series next year," said Mansell.
"I think pressure will bring to bear from the public and various other places about why he isn’t doing it.
"But whether he does it or not is immaterial to the series, I think the series will be bigger than any individual."
