Dennis: 'We win will at Monza'

Friday September 03 2004

Ron Dennis sees no reason why McLaren can't follow up their victory in Belgium with another in Italy next weekend.

Kimi Raikkonen broke McLaren's victory-drought on Sunday when he claimed the team's first win in over a year. Prior to Spa the last time the Woking-based squad tasted the victory champagne was at the 2003 Malaysian GP.

However, Dennis believes his team is more than capable of making it two from two at next weekend's Italian GP.

"It (the Belgian GP victory) is not a one-off," Dennis told Autosport magazine.

"We should have won at Hockenheim, we were very competitive at Silverstone. In Hungary we chose the wrong tyre and paid the price."

"In the circumstances, we can be cautiously optimistic about the remaining races because those circuits do play to the strengths of our car."

Monza is notorious for engine failures, and it is high speed, a devil for rear wings. Not only that, Ferrari use it as a third test track behind Fiorano and Mugello, so Ferrari have the place covered.

Though most likely it will be MS, either way JPM wouldn't have caught MS even if he tried.

If Williams had used Gene to hold up Michael Schumacher when they had the chance and if Montoya had set his car up for the straights, where you can pass, and not for the corners, where it is decidedly more difficult, JPM would have had a much better chance of winning that race and quite possibly could have done so, in fact I think he would have done so.

Monza should prove to be an exciting race this year as Williams, McLaren, BAR and of course Ferrari should be competitive. It doesn
