Mosley denies new rules favour Ferrari

Saturday September 04 2004

Max Mosley is adamant that the new rules the FIA intend imposing next year won't benefit Ferrari. Instead he believes they will "disadvantage the team that is doing best."

The FIA has already released its proposed new regulations for 2005, which look set to be introduced, as with less than 48 hours to go before the deadline Mosley set the team bosses, there is little sign of them having reached any agreement amongst themselves.

Mosley has given the bosses a September 6, 2004, deadline to present the FIA with "satisfactory proposals" that have been agreed to "by at least eight teams" or risk having a new set of rules imposed upon them.

The regulations proposed by the FIA President include reducing downforce by up to 25 percent; limiting teams to only one set of tyres for both qualifying and the race; long-life engines that must last for two race weekends and pitstops being abolished in their present form.

These regulations Mosley is hoping will not only spice up the show and also "disadvantage" Ferrari thereby curbing their dominance. The Scuderia's victory in this year's Constructors' Championship is their sixth successive triumph, while Schumacher's Drivers' title is his fifth in a row.

"Everybody recognises that Michael Schumacher and Ferrari are a sporting phenomenon," Mosley told The Times. "There has been no drop-off in television viewing figures and we have had record attendances at three races. But there are long-term objectives."

"If you make major changes to the rules, you usually disadvantage the team that is doing best. We changed the rules slightly in 2003 and Ferrari struggled to get on top of the changes for quite a while and we had an exciting season."

However, Minardi team boss Paul Stoddart doesn't agree that another round of rule changing will level the playing field. Instead, he believes they will give Ferrari an added advantage as the Scuderia has the budget to easily adapt to any new regulations imposed.

"They can do that because they can afford to. That does not help Minardi become more competitive," the Aussie said. "When there is change it is always the small teams who suffer because they don't have the resources."

Stoddart, though, isn't the only team boss who feels the FIA's new rules are handing Ferrari an unfair advantage. McLaren boss Ron Dennis recently told the BBC that he believes "the regulations proposed favour one team over another because of the circumstances they are in". He cited the proposed tyre and engine rules as examples of this.

Another team boss has questioned Mosley's stance on safety, pointing out that making a tyre last for an entire race will drive teams to use marginal compounds that are likely to cause a spate of late-race tyre failures and dangerous high-speed blow-outs - as seen at Spa.

At the current moment in time Ferrari is the best team in F1 but that will not remain the case indefinitely. Sometime, somewhere some team and some driver will overtake them and end the current spell of Ferrari domination. We

who do you all think will be the team to take over from Ferrari? My guess, and its a guess at best, is Renault.

What exactly are you asking us? Are you asking us who we think will be the first team to dominate after Ferrari is surpassed or who do we think will beat Ferrari more often than any other team?

Renault appears to be in a little bit of trouble at the moment, with many of their personnel going to Toyota and their weak engine continuing to be a bone of contention for them. It

My bad, should have explained myself better. I meant to ask who will be the next team to dominate F1 as Ferrari are now and McLaren (80's-early90's) and Williams (early to mid 90's) before them.
