Jenson: 'Dave let me down'

Tuesday September 07 2004

Jenson Button has admitted that the BAR team is not to blame for making his life so "unhappy" that he wants to leave at the end of the season. Instead he blames the team's boss, Dave Richards.

Button's decision to return to Williams in 2005 caused a public outcry when it was announced in early August, as some felt the Brit's imminent departure was a betrayal of sorts given that BAR had saved his flagging F1 career when they signed him in 2003. After two dismal years with Renault, 2001 and 2002, many in the paddock had written Button off, claiming that he didn't have what it takes to succeed in F1. BAR, though, were willing to put their faith in him and signed him on a two-year deal with an option for a third year.

However, according to Button it is not him who has betrayed BAR. Instead it's the other way around - although more precisely it's Dave Richards who has done the betrayal.

"People think David Richards and I are close friends. We have a good relationship at the track, but not an 'all right mate!' sort of thing," Button said.

"Our contract issues have been tough and we have tried to resolve them. But they are just one of many things. I don't feel let down by the team, but I do feel let down by David."

That news brings to light that BAT needs to sack DR does'nt it. Also vindicates JV's opinion last year.

DR had BAT's boys go off and make JB a big $$ offer. This has got me thinking. Just on a year ago, DR was nagging everyone that JV's big salary was taking away from development and the like, but for JB, money is no problem. OK, it's not as much as JV was getting, but it must have been a big increase if he was that desperate to hold him.
