JV had 'fun' tussling with Schumi

Tuesday September 28 2004

Jacques Villeneuve's return to F1 at the Chinese GP offered a glimpse of history as the Canadian fought it out with his old nemesis Michael Schumacher.

Villeneuve, who made his F1 comeback with Renault in Shanghai, tussled with the German for position during the 56-lap race, spending most of their battles ahead of Schumacher. The Ferrari driver, though, did manage to overtake his former rival when on lap 47 he powered passed Villeneuve only to then duck into the pits.

"I wasn't going to let him by but I wasn't going to block him either," said Villeneuve.

"There was no point. I was fighting with Mark (Webber), not with Michael. When Michael got on the inside, I still tried to brake late but he was quicker than me of course."

Villeneuve went on to finish the race in 11th place, while Schumacher was one position back. And despite neither scoring any points, JV says he enjoyed the tussles, although he's isn't sure Schumacher did.

"It was fun but it must have been boring for Michael because he is used to being at the front," the 1997 World Champ said. "To be stuck at the back must have been quite boring for him."

Naturally. It must have been a treat to him to come back and fight with him straight away. Of course, had it been at the front it would have been much better.

There are still 2 races, I hope they can have a good race-fight scene...

Come on JV!
