Jacques Villeneuve's 10th place finish in Japan was, he says, "embarrassing".

The Canadian, speaking to the Toronto Sun newspaper, said it was a combination of being race-rusty, a poor set-up and lack of track time in Japan which cost him his speed.

"We tried a completely new idea of set-up," said the former World Champion, "which sadly we didn't get to test because the track wasn't dry."

In the initial stages of the race, Villeneuve ran ahead of Renault teammate Fernando Alosno, but as soon as the Spaniard got ahead of the Canadian, he lapped 1.5 seconds faster, eventually finishing in fifth position.

Meanwhile, BAR's third and fourth place finishes in Japan have all but sealed second place in the Constructors' Championship. Alonso and Villeneuve will need to finish first and third, at least, with neither BAR driver scoring in Brazil.

Villeneuve, who was fired by BAR towards the end of last season, replaced Jarno Trulli at Renault in a bid to beat his old team. "BAR are definitely faster," said Villeneuve. "It was obvious. It's a disappointing result for us, especially as our main rivals scored points with both cars."

Sato has been O.K. , not impressive at all when you consider his whooping huge total of podiums compared to Button. Yes the "2nd" BAR F1 car has that "DNF" problem ,but still Sato would not have added many podiums anyways.

I do think though he is improving ,kind of like Massa .

Renault now though really is 5th best on the grid and they benefitted from everyone else around them falling down at the beginning of the season.

im not saying he would of added podiums. Im saying he'd of added quite a few more points, which is a major thing senna brings up to try and justy his stance on Takuma Sato.

JV got screwed over this race weekend. He had virtually no track time as a result of the weather yet still outqualified FA, on a heavier fuel load!!! As for his race pace, he tried a really unusual setup in the hope of it providing a miracle, but he just didn't get enough track time to test it out, as it turned out to be a shocking set up, understeer like you wouldn't believe. Pat Symonds acknowledges that the conditions screwed JV over, so at least Renault aren't angry with him, well so they say.

Remember, he hasn't had much mileage in the car, and with the race weekend shorted dramatically he basically went in blind. Add to that JV is nowhere near race fit yet, as he admitted (rare, as i doubt many would say they were tired and unfit, yet JV can acknowledge it!!). Suzuka is a very demanding track which requires a driver to have an immense amount of knowledge about his car, that JV has not. JV couldn't test before Suzuka cos of a VISA problem, but will test in Jerez this week, and he'll be all the better for it. At least JV isnt trying to make excuses and is telling it like it is, thankfully.

Coming on after a year out, and getting it right on torrid weather conditions, you can't really expect that from any driver. Alain Prost said he took some time to get settled in the car after his sabbatical. Let us hope the Jerez test benifited him, physically more than anything else.
