TEAM DUBAI SET FOR F1

Last Updated: Saturday, 16, October, 2004, 18:53

A new Dubai-based F1 team has unveiled plans to join the grid for the 2006 season.

Team Dubai F1 hopes to use Mercedes engines and could even receive technical assistance from McLaren.

The announcement comes just eight days after the Russian-backed Midland group said they would be entering the sport in 2006.

Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, president of Dubai Civil Aviation and a key backer of the team, said: "Dubai is committed to developing and supporting world class expertise in carefully-targeted high-technology industries.

"Formula 1, with its focus on technological and engineering innovation, provides us the perfect environment in which to develop and demonstrate our skills in these cutting edge areas."

Although the team will be based in Dubai, the manufacturing base will be located in the UK. A McLaren spokesperson confirmed to Reuters that they had been approached about giving technical assistance to the team.

There was talk earlier this season that Dubai was on the verge of buying Jordan.

But Tim Fulton, a representative of Team Dubai, said they had decided against taking over an existing team.

He explained: "We ultimately concluded that the acquisition of an existing team would never enable us fully to demonstrate our own commitment and excellence since success would inevitably have been linked with the existing team's brand and values.

Second, Midland have approached Dallara to design/build the chassis. Similar sort of deal as BAR - Reynard originally was.

Still with 2 announcements at (almost) the same time, the chances of one coming to fruition are greater than hoping for 1 from 1. Or so one would think. Just hope Ford find a buyer for Jag, F1 will be up to 11 teams, or even the limit - of 12!!

As I've said over and over again, give the team back to Jackie Stewart, he'll do wonders with it and he already has the machinery there, he can manage the whole bit.

It makes me wonder WHY Dubai would go this route after reading about TOYOTA'S dissapointment after being in the sport for 3 years !! IF TOYOTA with all the money they are funding in F1 can't be better how can a new team ????? without the backing of a recognised Motor Builder ???

I just think its good to see that there are some people who have enough confidence in the sport to want to join up. Hopefully they won't do a BAR (1st year only) and will gain respectability in their first year ala Jordan and Sauber.
