Karthikeyan and Dominguez for Jordan-Midland?

Written by: Cassio Cortes

Still the only Formula 1 squad with no confirmed drivers announced for the upcoming season, Jordan Grand Prix is now in the center of the pilot-market speculation after its (initially partial) acquisition by Russian industrial giant Midland Group.

Even before purchasing Eddie Jordan’s team, Midland - which will hold a launch ceremony in Moscow next month - had made known its interest in running Mexican Champ Car driver Mario Dominguez

Now, similarly to Mario, for both sporting and commercial reasons, F1’s newest team is eyeing Indian shoe Narain Karthikeyan.

The 28-year-old is a former Carlin Motorsport driver in junior formulae, which means he goes way back with new Midland sporting director Trevor Carlin. In addition, Midland has significant business interests in India, and, by hiring Karthikeyan, the Group would materialize the first-ever Indian-born Formula 1 driver - a move that also wouldn’t displease F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone, given the potential ratings boost the one-billion-inhabitants country could provide.

Karthikeyan, who spent the last three seasons in the World Series by Nissan, has been a race winner in most categories he’s contested but never put together a championship-winning season in a major ladder series - prompting critics to deem the easy-going driver “too good” to be a champion. The Indian (who has support from Tata Group, one of his country’s largest industrial conglomerates) has tested in F1 with Jaguar and Jordan back in 2001, and most recently with Minardi.

Still, both Karthikeyan and Dominguez could be instantly forced to take a back seat if Midland manages to pull off the hiring of BAR tester Anthony Davidson. The highly-rated Briton is on top of the wishlist of Midland director Colin Kolles.

"Davidson is one of my favorite drivers," he revealed. "But finding a solution [for releasing him from BAR] won't be easy."
