JORDAN: F1 HAS LOST ITS BALLS

(ITV)

Former team boss Eddie Jordan claims that the US Grand Prix fiasco is proof that Formula 1 has "lost its balls".

The outspoken Irishman, in his column in the latest edition of F1 Racing which goes on sale next Tuesday, said that he could not understand why the seven Michelin teams did not want to race at Indianapolis.

Jordan found it "unbelieveably sad" to watch the sport fall into a "trap of self-destruction".

"In the past, team bosses went to Bernie (Ecclestone) and said: 'The tyre company screwed up. We can't race, but we have to. Sort it.'

"The understanding was that the teams would be bound by his solution. Bernie would go to (FIA president) Max (Mosley), together they would find a way, and Bernie would say, 'Right, you're racing.'"

Jordan blamed the manufacturers' growing influence on the sport for the lack of control exercised by the F1's bosses and the team owners at Indy.

"Team bosses appear to be impotent," he said.

"They report to car company chairmen, sitting at desks far from the race track."

He also believes that Ecclestone and Mosley need to ensure politics is put in the background if F1 is to recover from Indygate.

"Bernie once had influence and control; but sadly, with the manufacturers, this no longer appears to be the case.

"Max seems to be at loggerheads with them and their spend-spend-spend attitude and is unwilling to compromise.

"The teams must resolve to go along with the rulings, Max must find common ground with the teams and car makers and Bernie must protect the entertainment value."

Indeed.

However I think the teams were right to do what they did in the interest of safety. I don't call that becoming to soft; I call that being responsible and caring about the safety of the drivers and other officials.

I agree with EJ's conclusion but for different reasons. F1 cars need more horsepower, wide slick tyres and ultra-fast tracks to run on. Instead they have been given the opposite and dangerous driving, as we continue to see from Montoya, Massa, Sato, Schumacher and others, goes unpunished or at a minimum insufficiently so.

I think Eddie's great, he was always such a dude, with his rose tinted glasses and his band who are actually quite good

I used to criticise him for that but he was a colourful character and they are sadly lacking in modern F1.
