Michael Hungaroring Incident - Video And Analysis

Recommended Posts

The other thread is just degenerating into trolling, maybe we can have a discussion here. (not saying I'm innocent there)

The video link first, for anyone who missed it.

My view of the incident.

Kubica is driving right behind Alonso, and Michael is closing up to the two of them, Alonso sees that / is told on the radio and deliberately brakes very hard at turn 13, (right before the pits). It catches Kubica by surprise and causes him to brake hard and he swerves a bit to avoid Alonso. Michael behind them is also caught by surprise, and cannot brake soon enough, and elects to pull up alongside. The mistake he then makes is being in front of the pit entrance, instead of lifting off (right of, since Alonso was going extremely slow) and letting Alonso and Kubica through, he just carries on. Alonso accelerates and follows him at the same speed, clearly showing he slowed deliberately.

Now Michael clearly made a mistake, and a penalty was probably in order. I don't see how this is comparable to what Alonso did on Friday, but despite the extenuating circumstances, he probably deserved a penalty, you simply do not overtake under red flags. However the penalty is harsh considering the fact that Alonso was playing games under a red flag, the stewards should at least have given him a verbal warning for that. There is a place for gamesmanship, it's not under red flags.

It's also extremely stupid that when the session is red flagged, the clock isn't stopped. We hardly get any running on Frodays as it is, and Saturday practice has already been curtailed to one session from two. If they want a two hours buffer for qualfying, they can start practice an hour earlier - it's not that hard to do.

Should make for an interesting race today though, penalty grids are the only way we've seen racing in the last 2 years, we just have to live with it.

Good catch you can totally see FA speeding back up to show that they were driving at similar pace.

I think that was very inenious on Alonso`s part. Well done Alonso he fooled the FIA too.

Yeh, I so long was not here... return from my vacation with the grate mood!

And now it is not the most joyful reason to discuss.....((((((((

My opinion- He has realy overtaken these drivers, but what I cannot understand, so why for ONE mistake he (Michael) recieved the same penalty, as well as for TWO ????? I mean Alonso, of course...

One is exactly- today it will be very interesting race....

Its pretty hard to tell from Kubica's onboard, but it looked like MS was going faster then either of them, before Alonso slowed down......

I haven't seen it from any other shot, so maybe theres something different I could see from that, but from that onboard alone theres nothing to complain about for MS or Ferrari.

Very intresting, however, anyone's opinion cannot change the Stewards decision, so I'm not even going to start a long argument - but, for the most part, I agree with cavallino there. In that angle, you can even see how Kubica lost a bit control there, so it's pretty much clear what happened. Anyways, it's already been a confirmation that Michael nor Fernando will win the race for the most part, but you never know. The penalties given to both drivers is a good 'spice-up' in the sport, because obviously for a long time, there hasn't been anything intresting going on, so this is something new and should sell some more tickets too.

I missed qualy, so I hope the speedtv crew fill me in during the pre-race. From the video, I can see clearly that M$ did not endanger the lives of anyone with his (illegal?) passing move. That being said it was nothing like the temper tantrum Fernando had during practice.

This video shows too little to be honest...i would like to see it from 5 seconds earlier from overview and not Kubica car.

I did get a bit frusterated, but at the end of the day, it's all entertainment. I think tommorow's race will be alot of fun and Im looking forward to it.

As I said in the other thread regarding this incident, a penalty was deserved, but the severity of the penalty dished out was too severe when compared to Alonso's dumb antics on Friday. Perhaps a second added to his times would have been fairer??
