Qualifying - new rule

Last year the driver that was leading the championships would come out first for the qualifying lap.

For 2004 this has been changed to the complete opposite. The first driver to come out for the qualifying lap will be the driver with less points in the championship.

This is good because the best drivers were coming out first and had to clean the track (during their qualifying lap)

What? No, you've got it wrong. It still functions the same, with the leader of the championship out first in the first qualifying session, and then the slowest driver in the first qually comes out first immediately following in the second qualifying. The difference is that both now happen back-to-back on Saturdays.

I went to find out exactly what is the new rule.

Last year the first driver to qualify was the leader of the championship.

This year the first driver to qualify is the winner of the previous race.

well there is a way around all this B.S..

Get onto CART and get there "truck Mounted Jet engine " to run anound the track before qualifying and blow any dirt off the track

I gotta say I am getting a little bit sick and tired of all these new rule changes in F1.. Can anyone tell me why in the past few years so many changes have DEEMED to be necessary !!!!

I wonder how thick this F1 rule book is now ?? seems like a need for a team to employ a Lawyer just to sort out the bloody rules.. Whatever happened to Motor Racing ??

i remember martin brundle last year at imola saying jean todt would be speaking to so & so, ferrari's official rule interpreter, to find out whether the marshalls helping schuey out of the gravel trap was legal or not!

Thanks Nichos and Taku.. yeah first to go motor racing get a top lawyer to find a loop hole on how to cheat the system so thats the first part of the budget, then find the guys to design and build the car, second part of budget, then find the mechanics to Tend to this baby, and then if you have money left EMPLOY a driver, or find a guy that has heaps of money and relieve him of it, OH of Course then we go racing.

The F1 has been called a CIRCUS many times before but it seems to me to be MOST appropriate these last few years, because all the CLOWNS are in the RULE making department

Also worth noting. I read that any driver who does not set a time in the first run of the session, for any reason at all, will not be allowed out for the second run.

wow, so if a driver blows a tyre or something else out of his control stops him from setting a first session time, he starts the race from the back?

That is the way I understand it, behind a driver that set a irst time but not a second. Although ahead of any driver qualifing 11th+ and the changing an engine.

Iwant to know if two or three do not finish first qually in what order do they appear in the race proper, is it in order of not quallifing or in rank order.?????

I think they go out based on championship points. Whoever is highest amongst the drivers who fail to record a time during the first qualifying lines up first at the rear of the pack for the race. Did that make sense?!?

I think, based on last year, it is based on when they order of apperance in qualifying. So if driver A fails to set a time in first qualifing and the driver B also fails, then in second qualifing driver X fails then driver Y, and driver M blows an engine after qualifing 5th and driver N after qualifing 12th, then I think the last six on the grid will be M, X, Y, A, B, N. That would IMO be the fairest way of doing it.

I think this new qualifying is gonna suck!!

1, With only a 2minute gap between the 1st and 2nd sessions no one is gonna push it in the 1st session at the risk of going off as they they then if they do get back to the pit have to use there 2nd car.

2,running order in the 2nd session ain't so important as the track will already be clean and have rubber down from the previous session.

3,there will be no glory in the smaller teams being fastest in the first session as there was last year as only 2 minutes between them.

ALSO

one engine rule.

1, On friday the bottom six teams who do run a third car/driver. That driver can then drive both race cars for all the sessions(friday) for car set up e.t.c as long has he uses his own tyre allocation.If the engine blows the race drivers do no get penalised.

Also say if at the end of the season M.S was in with a shout of the championship R.B could run his car on the Friday to set it up for him. R.b would lose 10 places on the grid but M.S wouldn't.

So friday is gonna be really dull and also 1st qualifying SO WELL DONE BERNIE THE FANS WIN AGAIN!!!!!
