Mark Webber - points system is strange

Recommended Posts

:(

I tend to agree with Mark Webber, regarding the new points system . I preferred the one used up until 2002, where only 6 drivers could score points and the difference between 1st and 2nd was of 4 points.

Since 2003 - 8 drivers can score points and the difference from 1st and 2nd is only 2 points.

As a result of this new system Kimi could have been Champion for 2003 with one or two victories.

i have 2 dissagree whith both u and mark on this 1 the new points is a lot better that the old. kimi nelly won the 2003 champ because he was more consistant that M$ and most drivers. kimi got a lot of 2nd 3rd and 4th wile M$ was wining or coming 5th 6th 7th 8th or just not in the points(on 1 occacion)

and also because it gives the smaller teams a better chans 2 scor champ points

this is also what made the mid-feld of tight in the points because there was notonly the top 3 scoring the points

both marina and webber make good arguments for their cases and I can see their points of view. What threw a spanner in the works was the competitiveness of Renault, now making a big 4 and closing off the points at some races. Although consistency should be rewarded, winning should be rewarded even more, as at the end of the day the goal is to win the race. It's great how the lesser teams have a chance at scoring more points, but Sauber, under the old system in 2001 did very very well. I'm all for helping the lesser teams, but not to the detriment of the winner.

LOL! sometimes the simplest solutions are the best!

but i think now they've done it (the change) they should keep it. cos to add more points before you know it you have a moto gp type points system where it's just out of control. it's about quality, not quanity.

they should concentrate on other areas now for rule changes eg slicks/driver aids/downforce/budgets even

There is also the point of being historically consistent - doubling points would throw off the scale. A good idea, but the F1 hardies don't like it sadly. I think 12 points for a victory is reasonable, as I believe it has been done in the past.

I think 4 points is too much gap between first and second. Maybe 12, 9, 7, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 would be fine

I believe the points system should be extended. Now if all the cars finish, which is becoming more and more possible with improved reliability, only the top 4 teams can get points – how many times did BAR finish 9th and not get any reward(there are a few examples). I think the top 10 finishers should get points – this would improve the situation for the back-markers and cut costs for teams such as Minardi as they would likely score a few points and thus be entitled to more money. In an ideal world I would like to see pole rewarded too with say a point, but that probably won’t happen.

How about an extra point for pole like CART racing, that would make them try even harder to get that elusive pole position and not sit back and make a "safe" lap!!

No there has never been 12 for a win 8 points from 1950-1960, 9 points from 1962 to 1990 and 10 points from 1991 to date.

In 1961 there was the confusing situation of drivers scoring 9 for the drivers championship and teams scoring 8 for the constructors.

In 1950-1959 there was 1 point for fastest lap, from 1960-2002 the 1 point was for 6th.

The points for 2nd,3rd,4th,5th were unchanged from 1950-2002.

Quite interesting everything you wrote! One point aditional for the pole position? I love this idea...

If I ran F1 I would do some other things as well:

1. Ban all forms of electronic driver aids – they’re the best drivers in the world so they hardly need help! Further more, this would distinguish the great drivers from the good drivers.

2. Bring back slick tyres – increasing grip and later braking which would lead to overtaking

3. Have a limit of one GP per country – it simply isn’t fair that Germany, France and Italy all get two in 2004.

4. Cut costs by having a more equal distribution of money generated by F1 and drastically limiting private testing.

5. Improve the TV pictures – it seems obvious but most people watch F1 on TV, yet only a few camera angles are provided and many broadcasters have personal bias to their nation’s drivers – At Japan in 2003 we saw too much of Takuma Sato and, if memory serves, ITV was receiving pictures of him just as MS was finishing the race to be crowned WC.

As well as a point for pole position and awarding points to the top 10 finishers as I suggested in my last post.

With those promises, I would vote for you Alister. Although I thought Monaco was independant and self governing (as far as any EU states are).
