la force supreme des mclaren 0 Report post Posted June 27, 2008 McLaren have taken front wing development to yet another level again. After having used a triple element front wing for several years, first the team introduced a bridge wing that was recently split up in two elements at the outer sides. At Silverstone however, the MP4-23 featured 4 panels - two grey and two red. The complexity is in stark contrast with the front wing of Force India, having only 2 base panels and simple nose-connected deck wings. source: www.f1technical.net

aussief1 4 Report post Posted June 27, 2008 That is a complex from wing!! I wonder how long it will be before we start seeing the copy cat versions?? I see that Force India are running the Red Bull inspired engine cover at the recent test at Silverstone.
DOF_power 0 Report post Posted June 27, 2008 The wings are quite cool, shame they're so bad for racing.
whiskee 0 Report post Posted July 1, 2008 Why not just get rid of all the wings and see whos really the best driver. A 10 lap race woudl then suffice.
HandyNZL 1 Report post Posted July 1, 2008 Throw them all in stock cars on dirt -then we'll sort the men from the pansies. Who cares! It's the back end that Macca needs to fix...Hamilton is sliding around too much....bring back the bullhorns!!!! And wings are necessary DOF...just get rid of all the crap between the front and rear ones and then things'll be better. IRL guys can pass ok with their limited wings and lack of crap in between. But then, they are on slicks....
DOF_power 0 Report post Posted July 2, 2008 Ground effects makes wings really small. See:
HandyNZL 1 Report post Posted July 3, 2008 But just think how much faster they would be with all the extra winglets etc, DOF.....horses for courses I guess, and if the engineers knew then what they know now....sheesh....cars would be fan-didly-astic by now. But as oft said by many, it's the rules that govern the ultimate shape and size of the cars...form follows function (rules). Thing is you look at those cars from that era, and they don't seem "right", even though we know they are....but half had the drivers too high up, high CoG's, and chassis that would seem like a wet blanket compared to today's stiff monocoques (easy Muzza and Mr Dribble's...I can see you salivating over that phrase already ) Era for era, rule for rule. DOF_power 0 Report post Posted July 3, 2008 The complicated multi wings are result of the retaliation battle against the FIA. The FIA took out the skirted venturi tunnels ground-effects 1.0 cars then the flat-boton + super diffuser ground-effects 2.0 actively controlled cars, then lifted the front wing so the teams retaliated by complicated wings+ winglets designs. CoG, stiffnes, flex could easily be worked around today. For every action there's a reaction, and in F1 about a dozen reactions, witch makes things worse. The FIA doesn't anticipate the reactions, and the reactions for their B* "level the playing field, reduce costs, improve the quality of racing" politics has allways had the opposite effects.
