A debate has gripped Formula One in arguing that a lack of place- swapping during grands prix is the biggest missing element to a more exciting 'show.'

''I think there's no doubt it improves the spectacle.''

Renault's Pat Symonds does not think emulating US-based NASCAR racing - where there might be five lead-changes in one lap - is necessarily 'what we want.

''We're starting to see big increases in spectators at World Rally,'' he added.

By definition in rallying, there is NO overtaking.

Symonds continued: ''What we see there is guys taking their car to the limit in a very obvious way. It's not something you obviously see in Formula One.''

The engineer said you watch a rally and think 'I couldn't do that'.

''Unfortunately you watch an F1 and you actually believe you could do it.''

I agree. That was one of the question I asked when I started watching F1... I still think it's stupid but can't really think of a way to improve it.

the only real way to solve it is reverse grid, this won't work if they have quali kos everyone will go as slow as possible. so ud start the race in the opposite order u finished the last one.

yes start the race in the opposit orded that the last race was finshed. thats a great idea. But if a good driver goes out eyrly in the race then we will start from the frount and he will most lickly win the race.

yep like the last round at Silverstone where the PRE qualifying was sort of a NON EVENT, because drivers thought it would rain or whatever.. even the great M.S. had a spin but never attempted to correct it by the on board video !!!

Nah, why bother with being able to PASS. Let the 2 hour race be decided by the QUALIFYING times. i.e. you get pole position and baring a mechanical fault you WIN !!!!!!!!!!! a bit like it is now only that team strategy plays a part. take away tyre stops and um well I feel this is how it will be, so to all the TV companies, show us all HEAPS of QUALIFYING, that way it will save us the electricity ( and save the world ) having to watch a 2 hour whatever time race

problem with the reverse model is that it will negate the need for friday and saturday i.e. which means forfeited TV revenues for F1. You can bet F1 marketing people won't even allow the option to be imagined let alone considered.

One suggestion was to test on the Friday and Saturday of a race weekend and not at other times of the season
