Pirelli Working On 19" Not 18.

More Modern look and will save Rubber (Whatever actual synthetic material they're using).

It's 2015s , let's have a newer look. I'm all for it ! flashingbanana.gif

I am ambivalent.

What I find funny is that Pirelli wanted it, to make the F1 tyre more road relevant. It might look similar, d'oh, but you do not see a lot of slicks on the street.

True not many slicks on the street but the sidewall construction is what can be transferred to street use, the slick is just the normal overlay rubber minus a pattern.

If you look at the Lotus with the 18" rim on it and look at the tiny BRAKE inside, just imagine how great the brakes will be with 19 " rims?? Only limitation in stopping the beast will be the tyre grip.

FIA would jump on that and make a certain brake size only can be used. It's not street racing, it's formula one. I just can't stand how people want them to look more like street cars. It's the pinnacle of Motorsport not some pimp my ride race car.

I was joking....... Mind you, I retain my stance about road relevance in general, I see no place for it. I know, manufacturers want to sell cars, but would you buy an AMG because it has the same ERS as the W05 (don't laugh, it will happen) or because MGP are killing the opposition?

Probably neither, but the ERS on a road car will be nothing like that on an F1 car. It cannot even be said that F1 is being used to develop ERS, because they are not allowed to.

You are right about the brakes, WebRic, there will be a rule stipulation that the brakes can fill the wheel, but they must be made from teflon.

Yeah that would be about right. As for road cars for me personally, I go for what drives good and to my enjoyment. Like some like real powerful cars, while they are fun, I get more enjoyment hammering a 2l vetec Honda civic screaming at 8krpm through some nice sweeping bends, nice suspension setup is vital.

It is all about the tyres looking like road car performance tyres, low sidewall (aspect ratio).

In terms of performance, the tyres currently are a reasonably large part of the suspension spring rate, which is probably quite challenging, because the spring rate will change with pressure in the tyre, albeit the pressure range fluctuation will be limited by using nitrogen.

With a much lower profile, the tyre will be firmer, meaning that the suspension will be much more in control. Net effect, not much, really, suspension engineers will find it easier to tune, because a variable will be almost removed i.e. tyre flex.

In terms of brakes, a bigger wheel means that larger diameter disc can be used, which means more pad area, potentially, and better heat dissipation.

I think you'll find Andy that the overall circumference of the tyre will remain the same. Just a bigger rim smaller tyre.

Oy this gives me a headache. Of all things that modern F1 car's employ, tires would not be high on my list as one to try and transfer to road cars. I think aerodynamics are a much better source to scavenge.
