Senna 0 Report post Posted April 26, 2005 This is blatant sexism! The women play fewer sets and can sometimes finish a game in around an hour yet they are paid almost as much as the men! This is utterly ridiculous
nojvnof1 0 Report post Posted April 27, 2005 if they play 5 sets they deserve the same money, if they play 3 they don't. I'm not sexist or anything, but getting paid the same for doing less work is not right, it doesn't happen in the workplace, why is it ok on the sporting field. As I say, if they start playing best of 5, by all means give them equal pay.
Sato 0 Report post Posted April 27, 2005 I agree with both of you, to truely be equal they should either play more and get the same, or play less, and get paid less! but looking at how mch money is to be had i might go practise my backhand.....
Max Mosley 2 Report post Posted April 28, 2005 I wonder if Montoya read this too? Regarding the difference in prize money I think its a difficult issue. On the one hand I agree they should have to work as hard but then women clearly have not reached the same level as men in tennis so even if they did play five sets you could question whether they deserve the same money. The question is, is this because they are at an innate disadvantage in tennis or because they are not as dedicated? If the former you could argue they deserve the same remuneration for getting as close to their potential as the men but then perhaps there should be a championship for shorter men as they would be at a disadvantage too but perhaps women make up a larger share of the population so its more practical to stop the preferential treatment there... In any case I think its a bit unfair as things stand because male tennis players have complained that they can't play as many tournaments as the women because of the longer matches so actually top women may earn more prize money than the top men (I'm just guessing there though!).
